We often hear about extraordinary things in ordinary places (See: everything made in the last century or so), but when do we find those rare gems of pure literary gold about ordinary things in extraordinary places?
I've recently seen some people trying this concept, and failing hard at it.
we've had some movie's lately about US invading ALIEN worlds, and finding them to be A LOT like us, and the story has been spread out over the idea of cannibalism, and so many other mediums where we think some kind of monster is HORRIBLE, when they're just doing what we do. For example, the ORIGINAL BOOK of I Am Legend.
He finds himself killing these Vampires thinking himself good, but he turns out to be the last of a dying breed, and is the REAL monster. He's become the monster of legend to these people, that are the newest stage in the food chain.
My point is, we've all lost the creative part of our minds, the part that says "Hey, I'm gonna make something new! Something not done before!" and MEAN IT. Instead, we SAY that, and then just make a new version of an ALREADY made story. Take our Superhero genre for example. Or almost ALL anime and manga. It's being mass produced, and it's not original.
George Carlin had a part in his book, and one of his routines, where he said we should just quit interfering in our children's lives, and quit over scheduling them, and overloading them with tv, internet, games, etc. He said to just take 2 hours a day, and put them outside and let them daydream and "stare at a fucking tree". I think he had it right.
As long as we're just sitting here, everyday ,on the internet, playing games, watching the TV, we're not getting ORIGINAL, NEW IDEAS; we're just rethinking already used ones and recycling the same old, boring stuff!
I think it was best said in the 1976 Movie, "Network":
"We'll tell you anything you want to hear; we lie like hell. We'll tell you that, uh, Kojak always gets the killer, or that nobody ever gets cancer at Archie Bunker's house, and no matter how much trouble the hero is in, don't worry, just look at your watch; at the end of the hour he's going to win. We'll tell you any shit you want to hear. We deal in *illusions*, man! None of it is true! But you people sit there, day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds... We're all you know. You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the tube is reality, and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the tube tells you! You dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even *think* like the tube! This is mass madness, you maniacs! In God's name, you people are the real thing! *WE* are the illusion! So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now. Turn them off right now. Turn them off and leave them off! Turn them off right in the middle of the sentence I'm speaking to you now! TURN THEM OFF..."
This goes for EVERYTHING!
Your TV, your radio, your games, and your internet! I mean, DAMN, read a fucking book! Have any of you people realize how goddamn ADDICTED we are to socializing, so our media, to this culture of regurgitated IDEAS and LIES we feed on? We let our media think FOR us!
And I'm no exception! I spend all my time listening to music, listening to other people's thoughts, and spreading the gospel of the human media! I'm SICK of not being able to think for myself! I'm sick of not being able to come up with anything original! I'M SICK OF BEING IN A GODDAMN FUCKING HIVEMIND.
Another quote from Network, wherein Howard Beale proclaims "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!" is just what I want to do. It speaks for what everyone should come to on their own!
Now, I'm not saying "Everyone, rush out and watch Network!"
Just the opposite!
Get your ass off your fucking media, for just two hours a fucking day, and THINK. Just THINK.
Just close yourself off from your media, and just spend some time daydreaming! Just sit there and THINK!
I'll end this tl;dr post with this final message:
The way Network ended was he had disillusioned himself into thinking he was spreading the gospel of truth. He thought he was helping, when he wasn't doing anything but helping the media hads. People weren't LISTENING to his message. Oh, they heard it, and they emulated it, but they didn't GET IT. they just liked the IDEA of what he said.
And that's what we do, we hear an idea, and may even act on it, but we don't UNDERSTAND the idea. Instead, we follow along like the sheep we are. It's like how all the conspiracy theorists follow this rather charismatic Alex Jones fellow. He's just leading you along, filling your heads with extravagant ideas of a NWO, and everything else. Quit listening to his words like a religion. Think for yourself.
In the end of Network, Howard Beale is killed after the head of his broadcasting department calls a hit on him because his ratings drop.
I understand the idea of social networking and our culture being networked, but I honesty think we ran intot his headfirst without thinking. We invented a new technology and released it immediately. It's human nature to fuck up, but how about we do some mental backtracking and make sure we do this right?

For what is a brat, what has he got
When he finds out that he cannot
Say the things he truly thinks
But only the words, not what he feels
The record shows, i´ve got no clothes
And did it my way
